The limitations of congregational prayers in mosques and surau need to be reviewed

PAS Sarawak supports the efforts of the Sarawak government and the direction of the Sarawak Islamic Religious Council in providing protection to Muslims through efforts to control the spread of the COVID-19 virus with guidelines for the maintenance of mosques and suraus during the Movement Control Order (MCO) throughout Sarawak.

One thing that needs to be reviewed is the limitations of the congregation by adhering to the physical spacing in the prayer room. This should be in accordance with the maximum capacity according to the size of the mosque or surau where if the mosque is large and spacious then the congregation limit should be increased, not just 200 or 100 people during Friday prayers and reduced to 50 people during obligatory prayers.

For example, such as the obligatory prayers of the Sarawak State Jamek Mosque Not more than 100 people and the Divisional Mosque, District, Sub -District, Parish, and Surau Not more than 50 people, should be added according to the maximum capacity of the mosque or surau.

The same goes for Friday prayers in Mosques and Suraus (which have been given permission to establish Friday prayers). Masjid Jamek Negeri Sarawak Not more than 200 people and Division/District/Sub -District/Parish Not more than 100 people. Friday prayers at the permitted surau Not more than 50 people should also be coordinated with the number of obligatory prayers. Meanwhile, the waiting time for Friday prayers is longer than the obligatory prayer time. Why must there be a difference in the amount between the time of Friday prayers and obligatory prayers? This matter also needs to be given attention and it needs to be coordinated.

Why should we differentiate between the number of Friday prayers and obligatory prayers when many people come for obligatory prayers, especially when Maghrib and Isha prayers, sometimes exceed the prescribed limits. If the obligatory prayers are attended by many people, it is even better because it is a sign that Muslims are aware of their obligation to do the command of Allah, not just many at certain times, such as Friday prayers or Hari Raya prayers only.

This needs to be adjusted because we find that there is a large mosque and the prayer space is half empty and needs to be filled according to the maximum capacity according to the size of the mosque. The mosque management can issue a notice on how many people can pray in the prayer room as specified. Controls when entering and leaving the mosque must adhere to stricter SOPs so that everything runs smoothly.

We urge that this matter be given attention by the Sarawak Islamic Council, especially soon, the Muslims will celebrate Hari Raya Qurban/Idul Adha where many want to pray in a congregation at mosques and suraus. Cooperation with the Sarawak Islamic Council and relevant parties is greatly appreciated.

Yours faithfully,
