Schools are for teaching morals, not selling alcohol

KUALA LUMPUR: Ketua Dewan Muslimat PAS Malaysia (DMPM), Ustazah Nuridah Mohd Salleh, expressed deep regret over the incident involving the auction of alcoholic beverages in a primary school hall in Pontian, calling it not only shameful but also damaging to the image of educational institutions and harmful to the emotional and moral development of students.

She said what should have been a learning environment was instead turned into a venue for inappropriate activities, which sparked physical altercations and raised safety concerns.

“I emphasize that a school is a place to nurture exemplary individuals! This means a school should be a place of dignity and civility, not a stage for immoral conduct,” she said in a statement.

According to her, incidents like throwing chairs and fighting over alcohol illustrate a breakdown in values and discipline, which must be firmly rejected by all parties—parents, teachers, and the wider community.

As such, she said the Ministry of Education Malaysia must take firm action against the school involved.

She also stressed that the Johor State Education Department must ensure clear guidelines for all events so that they do not involve alcohol or other immoral elements.

She added that parents, educators, and society must work together to monitor school activities to ensure that moral and spiritual values remain intact.

“Schools are a platform for educating citizens. Any activity that contradicts values of harmony must be stopped immediately so that our children continue to be nurtured in a safe, harmonious, and morally sound environment,” she said. – HARAKAHDAILY 10/7/2025
