MELAKA – The transmission and reception of Slow Scan Television (SSTV) as used by astronauts in International Space Station (ISS) will be highlighted by the Malaysian Amateur Radio Transmitters’ Society (MARTS) in conjunction with World Space Week (WSW) 2023, from Oct 4 to 10.

MARTS honorary secretary Zanirul Akhmal Zanirun said SSTV is a picture or data transmission method via amateur radio and this can be done without broadband connection

“This method is very important in emergency or disaster situations during telephone and internet service disruption or when out of network coverage area.

“Amateur radio is not just for communicating like using a telephone, but it has other functions such as tracking a location with coordinates, communicating with satellites, sending images and data, morse code communication, fox hunting and so forth,” he said in a statement here today.

Zanirul Akhmal said that in addition to SSTV, MARTS will also have a display of high frequency (HF), very high frequency (VHF) and ultra high frequency (UHF) communication radio equipment that can be used for voice communication within and outside the country.

Other items include satellite communications equipment, radiosonde tracking instrument or weather balloon, morse code apparatus and Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS) apparatus set up.

He said WSW is an international celebration of space science, technology, applications and is being held in appreciation of those who have contributed to the betterment of the human condition through space technology.

“It is hoped that the activities organised will be able to increase the public’s interest, especially students, in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), ” he said.

WSW is celebrated worldwide from October 4 to 10 every year to commemorate the launch of Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite, on Oct 4, 1957, and the signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space on Oct 10, 1967.

During World Space Week, space education and outreach events are organised by space agencies, aerospace companies, schools, planetaria, museums, and astronomy clubs around the world

In 2022, WSW witnessed over 11,200 activities carried out by various parties in 87 countries throughout the six-day celebration.- Bernama
