KUALA NERUS – The Terengganu government is still gathering data on the losses suffered by residents affected by floods in the state and will channel suitable assistance depending on their needs.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said that, for now, the affected Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK) chairmen were dealing with the state assemblymen and district officers regarding the co-ordination of data and aid.

“It takes time because the losses the residents suffered differed and must be audited. Some experienced damaged furniture and electrical equipment while some had their cars submerged in floods.

“Assistance will be channelled from the Darul Iman Fund. At the same time, immediate aid from corporate bodies had also been channelled, including from the state zakat contributions,” he told reporters after the ground-breaking ceremony for an affordable flat project in Kampung Banggol Pauh here, today.

It is understood that the fifth wave of floods in Terengganu, which began on Feb 25, affected over 17,000 victims in eight districts in the state.

Ahmad Samsuri said the Terengganu Islamic Religious Council and Malay Customs (Maidam) would bear the cost of constructing new houses for zakat-recipients whose homes were destroyed by floods.

To date, he added, 4,560 household heads (KIR) who evacuated to temporary relief centres had received the Compassionate Financial Aid (BWI) of RM1,000 each from the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma).

Of the total, 246 of them were in the district of Kuala Terengganu, followed by Besut (534), Dungun (1,094), Marang (one), Hulu Terengganu (2,478) and Kuala Nerus (207).
