KANGAR – Barisan Nasional’s long-standing political domination in Perlis was wiped out in a single sweep last night when the coalition lost all three parliamentary seats and 14 of the 15 state seats to Perikatan Nasional (PN) in the 15th general election (GE15).

Perlis PN chairman Mohd Shukri Ramli, in pointing out that BN has now ‘no more presence’ in the state, said steps will be initiated for the formation of the new state government soon.

“As to who will be the new Menteri Besar, we (Perlis PN) will leave it to the party leadership and I understand that authorisation letter by the party to form the state government is on its way from Kuala Lumpur,” he told reporters at the Perlis PAS complex last night.

PN took control of Perlis with a landslide victory, winning 14 of the 15 seats it contested, except for Indera Kayangan, which was won Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Gan Ay Lin, representing PKR.

By not winning even a single state seat, it is BN’s worst-ever performance in Perlis. In GE14, the coalition won 10.

Mohd Shukri, who is also Perlis PAS Commissioner described PN’s achievement as monumental, saying that the Perlis electorate was ‘brave’ enough to vote for a change and embrace PN’s ‘Clean and Stable’ slogan for GE15.

Meanwhile, incumbent Arau MP Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, who contested and won the parliamentary seat on a PN ticket this time around after being dropped as a candidate by UMNO, admitted that he did not expect such a huge PN victory in Perlis. – Bernama
