Civil servant caught with ketum leaves

ALOR SETAR – Police detained a civil servant when he was caught attempting to smuggle 270 kilogrammes of ketum leaves in 34 packets, estimated to be worth at RM10,800 at a roadblock at Jalan Kuala Kuang, near Baling this morning.

Baling district police chief Supt Syed Basri Syed Ali said the 26-year-old suspect was driving a Proton Alza from Baling heading towards Gerik, Perak when was stopped by policemen manning the roadblock at 7 am.

Upon inspection, police found 34 black packages containing ketum leaves wrapped in transparent plastic in the rear passenger seat and the boot.

“Initial investigations revealed the suspect from Kampung Naga, Kepala Batas had rented a car to transport the ketum leaves from Pedu to Gerik, Perak for RM800 per trip,” he said in a statement here today.

Syed Basri said the suspect was taken to the Kupang police station for further action.
