VLADIVOSTOK, Russia – A third of all cyberattacks in 2022 targeted the countries of the Asian region, and 27 per cent of the affected Asian organisations had to suspend their operation due to hackers, reported Sputnik, quoting CEO Advisor at Russian software company Positive Technologies Artyom Sychev on Tuesday.

“The Asian region is subject to the most powerful and frequent attacks, as global statistics show, it was targeted by a third of all cyberattacks in 2022. The reasons for them lie, first of all, in cyberespionage. At the same time, almost a third of companies had to suspend their activities. This huge figure shows that it is necessary for organisations to analyse the unacceptable events to build security aimed at their prevention,” Sychev said on the sidelines of the ongoing Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Vladivostok, citing the company’s study.

The study found that 27 per cent of cyberattacks affected the main operation of the Asian organisations, including a temporary shutdown of business processes and lack of access to infrastructure or data.

At the same time, Asian state institutions – 22 per cent of the total number of cyberattacks – were most affected, followed by industrial companies (9 per cent), IT entities (8 per cent) and financial companies (7 per cent), according to the study.

The analysts noted that the majority of cybercrimes in the Asian region (81 per cent) targeted computers, servers and network equipment, adding that in 22 per cent of the cases, the attackers hacked web resources, most often using vulnerabilities or compromising credentials.
