
ANKARA – A magnitude-5.0 earthquake shook Türkiye’s central province of Konya on Tuesday, Xinhua quoted the country’s disaster agency.
The epicentre of the quake, which occurred at 6.08 pm local time (1508 GMT) at a depth of 7.24 km, was located in the Selcuklu district, the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority said.
The earthquake was felt in the city centre and the districts of Konya. TV footage showed citizens leaving their homes in panic.
The Konya governor’s office said no injuries or casualties have been reported so far.
The earthquake came almost six months after the February twin earthquakes that killed more than 50,000 people in Türkiye and Syria.
Meanwhile in Addis Ababa, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 shook the southeast of the Eritrean capital Asmara on Tuesday evening, authorities said.
The quake, which was at a depth of 10 km, occurred at 8.15 pm local time (1715 GMT), Eritrean Information Minister Yemane Meskel said on social media.
Its epicentre was at the town of Irafalle, according to the Eritrean Ministry of Mines and Energy.
According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake hit around 55 km southeast of Asmara.
So far, there have been no reports of damage or casualties.
Asmara, which is located at over 2000 m above sea level making it the second highest capital in Africa, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well-preserved modernist architecture in 2017.- Bernama
