KUALA LUMPUR – The 2020 Asean Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup Championship, which was supposed to be held this month before being moved to April next year, has been postponed once again – this time to December 2021 – in view of the COVID-19 situation.

AFF president Major General Khiev Sameth, in a statement issued tonight, said the decision was made after taking into account the health and safety of all parties.

He asserted that despite there having been positive development regarding the COVID-19 vaccine, the AFF decided not to take the risk by continuing the tournament as originally scheduled.

“Given the complexities around the organisation of the event, and the many people and organisations that are impacted by it, the AFF believe in taking a pragmatic approach and making a decision early that will allow the stakeholders to have enough notice to reorganise their activities,” he said.

Sameth said the AFF Suzuki Cup will now take place from Dec 5, 2021 to Jan 1, 2022.

Initially, the 2020 AFF Suzuki Cup tournament was slated to be held from Nov 23 to Dec 31 2020, but was postponed to April 11-May 8, 2021 due to pandemic. Now, it’s set for next December.

Malaysia won the inaugural AFF Suzuki Cup under the guidance of coach Datuk K. Rajagobal in 2010 when it was jointly hosted by Indonesia and Vietnam.
