KUALA TERENGGANU – Members of the public are reminded against trespassing any lighthouse or areas that have been installed with beacons under the supervision of the Marine Department (JLM).
This is due to the fact that the lighthouses and beacons installed by JLM either on land, along the coast or sea areas are government assets and legal action can be taken against trespassers.
In a statement issued today, JLM said that the lighthouses and beacons serve as an early marker on land and a guide to ship navigation.
“The design and location of the lighthouses and beacons are built specifically for this purpose and it is unsuitable for conducting recreational activities such as fishing and diving.
“Any kind of recreational activity in these areas could result in serious injury or death. JLM has never appointed any party or individuals to provide transportation services to the lighthouses owned by the JLM for any recreational activities,” said the statement.
There have been several incidents where irresponsible individuals were caught on videos trespassing into lighthouse areas including in Terengganu for fishing and uploaded on social media platforms like Youtube.
JLM had also logded a police report over the incident for further action.
The department is responsible for maintaining a total of 40 lighthouses and 415 beacons nationwide.
