ALOR SETAR – Hospital Sultanah Maliha (HSM) in Langkawi will be upgraded in an effort to improve its facilities and services for the local residents and tourists to the resort island.
Kedah Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said the upgrading work was expected to cost RM600 million.
“Currently, patients who are in critical condition will be transferred to Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah (HSB) here but there is the transportation problem that requires hiring a boat or taking a ferry to get to the mainland.
“So with the upgrading of HSM, its current shortcomings will be addressed including by increasing the number of beds, providing better facilities and using new technology,” he told reporters, here, today.
Earlier, Muhammad Sanusi who is also chairman of the board of directors of Kedah Medical Centre (KMC), officiated at the opening ceremony for the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Digital Mammography machines at this private hospital, here, today.
Meanwhile, he said the Kedah government welcomed the building of more medical specialist hospitals in the state to enable the people, especially the locals, to receive the best treatment for their health.
“There have been many proposals to build medical specialist hospitals in Kedah and we welcome this. But I believe it is rather difficult as the cost will be high. Hopefully, the building of more government and private hospitals in the state in future will benefit the people,” he added.
