LABUAN – The country’s oil and gas industry players have been told to enhance their early response measures to ensure the safety of people living in the vicinity of their sites.

The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department deputy director general (Development) Datuk Edwin Galan Teruki said it was crucial to emphasise the early emergency measures following several incidents of explosions involving high-risk industries in the country and abroad.

“Industry players related to oil and gas should always be alert about the risks the industry poses to the population living close to their industrial sites.

“I propose that industry players always cooperate with the fire stations in their vicinity in the aspects of emergency response and early safety measures,” he told reporters after witnessing the Labuan Emergency Mutual Aid Manual (Amendment 2021) here today.

“For at-risk industrial sites and premises that are close to residential areas, attention should be given to early safety measures,” he said adding that they should implement a plan of early warning to ensure the safety of residents in the surrounding area.

Meanwhile, Labuan Fire and Rescue Department director Ismaidi Ismail said emergency early response training will continue to be carried out involving oil and gas industry security units and nearby villagers.

“This training will be carried out continuously so that they (the villagers) can implement the early safety measures without having to rely entirely on the fire department during an emergency,” he said. – Bernama
