KOTA BHARU – The Kelantan Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIK) has set a RM215 million zakat collection target this year.

MAIK president and also the Tengku Temenggong of Kelantan Tengku Tan Sri Mohamad Rizam Tengku Abdul Aziz said MAIK recorded RM210 million in zakat collection last year compared to RM202 million in 2020, an increase of 3.7 per cent.

“The largest amount of zakat was received from Income, namely, RM126 million followed by Business (RM39 million), Fitrah (RM9.4 million), Savings (RM1.9 million) and other zakat (RM1.4 million).

“Insya Allah, this year we have targeted a collection of RM215 million despite still in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“However, there is still an increase in terms of zakat contribution from the public to MAIK,” he told a media conference here today.

Commenting further, Mohamad Rizam said zakat contributions from the younger group were also up which clearly showed their level of awareness concerning zakat.

“Contributions from young entrepreneurs and businessmen rose in terms of percentage. This is because they have an awareness compared to previously when maybe they did not take an interest in zakat,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said MAIK also launched the e-distribution system today, namely an online assistance application system to replace the manual application system using forms.

“This system is divided into two sub-systems, namely, Assistance Application System and Assistance Application Approval System which are both online-based,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said MAIK had also extended assistance to the Orang Asli community in Gua Musang who recently faced encroaching tigers in their villages by distributing RM200 and food aid each to over 700 people from the community.
