BAKU – A Su-25 fighter jet of the Armenian armed forces has been destroyed by Azerbaijan’s Air Defence units, reported Azerbaijan State News Agency (AZERTAC) quoting the Ministry of Defence as saying.

Armenia’s fighter jet was shot down while attempting to strike Azerbaijan’s positions in the direction of Jabrayil district on Saturday at about 11.11 (local time), the ministry added.

On Friday night, Armenia launched a missile on Azerbaijan’s second-largest city of Ganja, killing 13 civilians and injuring more than 40 others.

The attacked residential area in Ganja, miles away from the occupied Nagorno-Karabakh region, was shelled by missile strikes and around 20 apartment buildings had been hit, Baku’s prosecutor general’s office said Saturday.

The renewed intense military clashes that began on Sept 27 had resulted in the loss of lives, including civilians on both sides. Both Azerbaijan and Armenia have blamed each other for starting the fighting.

On Oct 10, both Azerbaijan and Armenia agreed to a Russia brokered humanitarian ceasefire allowing an exchange of prisoners and the recovery of dead bodies in Nagorno-Karabakh. Since then Baku and Yerevan have accused each other of breaching the ceasefire.

The latest clash in the South Caucasus region is the most serious one after 2016. In July 2020, the military of the two countries also clashed along their shared border.
