ALOR STAR – Kedah Menteri Besar, Dato’ Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md. Nor, has labeled the prosecution of his former senior officials in connection with corruption and bribery in rare earth element (REE) mining as possibly politically motivated.
Sanusi expressed his discontent, particularly regarding the inclusion of his name in the charge sheet related to his former political secretary, Mohamad Hilmi Abdul Wahab, in the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court.
He argued that his name should not have been included in the charge sheet since Mohamad Hilmi did not directly work for him but rather served the Menteri Besar of Kedah.
He characterized the inclusion of his name as politically motivated and questioned the appropriateness of linking him to the charges.
During a press conference after an exco meeting, Sanusi voiced his concerns, stating, “That’s what I said politically motivated; he was appointed because he is not the political secretary of Muhamad Sanusi, he is the Political Secretary of the Menteri Besar of Kedah. It’s not appropriate to write my name; it seems to be playing politics to that level.”
The charges involved Muhamad Sobri Osman, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Menteri Besar Corporation (MBI) of Kedah, and Mohamad Hilmi.
Both individuals were charged in court after an investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) related to REE mining activities.
Sanusi expressed his belief that Muhamad Sobri and Mohamad Hilmi should have the opportunity to clear their names in court.
He also commented on the impact of social media accusations, noting that unfair “prosecution” had occurred against the accused parties even before formal charges were filed.
