KUALA NERUS – Stricken with a heart disease and hyperthyroidism is no obstacle for Nur Aufa Johan to excel and emerge as the Royal Education Award recipient at the Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin’s (UniSZA) 15th convocation ceremony today.
Despite her health condition, the 24-year-old Bachelor of English with Communication graduate from Petaling Jaya, Selangor, beat the odds and turned the pain into motivation in pursuit of success.
The fifth of six siblings said she was diagnosed with an enlarged heart and hyperthyroidism when she was 15.
Since then, Aufa said she had to go in and out of hospital for follow-up treatments, which resulted in unsatisfactory results in her Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) examinations.
“At the time, I was really disappointed that I couldn’t give my parents excellent exam results like my brothers and sisters.
“Although my parents understand the difficulties I face, I am determined to work harder and make them proud,” she said when met at the 15th UnisZA Idul Ilmi Convocation Ceremony here today.
Nur Aufa, who now works as a Strategic Corporate Communication officer at PETRONAS, was chosen to receive the award after completing her bachelor’s degree with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.91, earning her a trophy and RM7,500 in cash.
The award was presented by UniSZA chancellor the Sultanah of Terengganu, Sultanah Nur Zahirah.
Earlier, Sultanah Nur Zahirah, in her royal address at the ceremony, urged UniSZA to focus on the agenda of producing a balanced generation in its education system and model.
Her Royal Highness said that many young people today are seen to be addicted to screens and the metaverse, leading them to become isolated in their own worlds.
Therefore, she said efforts must be undertaken immediately to liberate these young people from ‘virtual prisons’ and restore the freedom of their soul and faith in order to keep values from falling apart.
Sultanah Nur Zahirah also congratulated UniSZA for its inclusion in this year’s 1,500 Times Higher Education World University Ranking.
A total of 3,608 graduates will receive their respective degrees and diplomas at the four-day convocation ceremony that began today. – Bernama
