Virtual Chinese New Year celebration: PAS youth marks history

DESPITE the COVID-19 pandemic, PAS Youth via its National Unity Bureau, had successfully organised a virtual celebration of the 2021 Chinese New Year. The celebration was held on 20 February 2021 (Saturday) and was chaired by two Mandarin-fluent speakers, Luth Gaoos and Nurzahida Ahmad Sh’arani.

The maiden celebration was initiated with the recital of three verses from the Quran by 17 year-old, Sumaiyyah bin Mohammad. The recital was uniquely accompanied by Malay and Mandarin translations. The Chairman of National Unity Bureau, Mr Arifriazul Paijo officiated the celebration of 50 guests online via Zoom.

The dignitaries during the gala included the highest council members of PAS Youth, Mr Balendran a/l Balasubramaniam (Head of PAS Supporters), Datuk Nicole Wong (Head Central MCA Youth), Mr Jason Leong (Chair of the Association of the NexGen Christians of Malaysia) and Mr Tai Zee How or more fondly known as ApekCina, an attorney and a social media figure.

The commemoration was further honoured with a speech by Ms Loh Pai Ling (Chairman of the Buddhist Missionary Society Malaysia) and with the presence of Mr Timmy Say (a writer), Mak Khuin Weng (social activist), PU Akram Ikrami Taib Azamudden (Akademi Dakwah Anak Muda), Dr Muhammad Fairuz Azmi (Pertubuhan Perpaduan Anak Muda Malaysia), Mr Muhammad Wen Rizal (PAS Youth activist), Mr Mohd Amzar (Head of the Department of National Unity, GAMIS) and Mr Seow Han Lin, a Chinese graduate. A casual song recital was performed by Tahfiz students, singing Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin (The Moon that Conquers my Heart) in Mandarin.

The audience was impressed by the PAS Youth effort in bridging the gaps with the non-Muslim societies, including other political parties, non-governmental organsiation (NGOs) and individuals. Mr Tai Zee How (ApekCina) acknowledged that PAS Youth has marked a significant history, gathering political parties based on the Chinese community, NGOs and other influential individuals among the Chinese community. The view was supported by Ms Loh Pai Ling, the first woman to be elected chairing the main NGO representing the Buddhist community. Mr Jason Leong, chair of one of the Christian NGOs and was inaugurated as a Unity Figure during PAS Youth Annual General Meeting in 2019, exerted that PAS Youth is moving forward towards becoming a political party which could lead a diverse group of people.

Head of PAS Youth Malaysia, HM Senator Ir Ts Hj Khairil Nizam Khiruddin shared with the audience among the many efforts taken to uphold the struggle of social justice in a multicultural society was by appointing members of PAS Supporters as members of Dewan Negara and special government officer. Other efforts include the education institutes under PAS Youth to deliver Mandarin and Tamil language classes in order to inculcate the development of the next generation who are able to communicate even more effectively with one another. PAS is committed to bring forward the unity and harmonious agenda for the sake of the nation’s prosperity.
